To prepare for the exam, and to gain relevant field experience, most candidates receive training at specialized career schools or junior colleges. It is imperative for prospective CPCs to have on-job experience as medical coders, and to also have relevant experience in a healthcare office environment arbitrating the medical coding of  services, operations and diagnoses.

Medical Billing and Coding professionals are responsible for assembling and organizing the patient’s information and correctly entering it into a computer database. A specific code is assigned to every diagnosis and treatment that a doctor uses, which is crucial for doctors’ relations with insurance companies. Medical Billing and Coding professionals serve as liaisons between doctors and insurance companies to make sure that the healthcare facility is reimbursed properly based on specific insurance policies. Medical Billing and Coding professionals are vital to the current, and future, health care systems in America.
